On Wednesday, October 19, 2022, some employees of the Dean's Office and members of the student council of the Faculty of Civil Engineering had the opportunity to participate in a walk-through of the nearby construction site of the new replacement bridge Turmstraße in northwest Aachen. The site visit was organized by Jennifer Cockx and carried out by the project manager Walter Heitmann (both HOCHTIEF), who provided the visitors with a lot of background information and had an answer to every question.

The old bridge was completely demolished within three days in mid-May of this year. The reason for the demolition was considerable and irreparable bridge damage. Thus, plans for a new bridge have been underway for several years. The inner-city location as well as the direct proximity to the railroad tracks of the Aachen West station pose a great challenge for the construction project. This challenge has been taken up by the engineering office Doser Kempen Krause Ingenieure and the construction company HOCHTIEF, in addition to all those involved in the Aachen municipal authority, and the first work began as early as May.

In all likelihood, the new bridge will be in place by the end of 2023 and, when in use, will create more space for pedestrians and cyclists over a total width of 25 meters.

The Faculty of Civil Engineering would like to thank Jennifer Cockx and Walter Heitmann once again for the interesting and informative tour.
