Exchange Programs

T.I.M.E. Double Master's Program: Within the agreement between the Faculty of Civil Engineering and the CTU Prague in the Czech Republic, a limited number of students have the opportunity to take part in the T.I.M.E. double master's program. The goal of the T.I.M.E. (Top International Managers in Engineering) program is to train highly qualified students for the European job market.

Main Features of the T.I.M.E. Program: Highly qualified students in the master's degree program civil engineering with the specialization constructive engineering transfer after their second semester to the partner university in Prague. There they complete the first two semesters of the English master's degree program building structures. In conclusion, students are required to write a master's thesis for each partner university as well as the CTU Prague via the T.I.M.E. program once they have successfully completed their degree program at both universities. Although the time to complete the master's degree program is at least two semesters longer, students will achieve two master's degree programs at two renowned European universities that qualify them for an international career. The International Exchange Office of the Faculty of Civil Engineering advises students about everything concerning the program including the recognition of courses from the CTU Prague at the RWTH Aachen University.

Only Students of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the RWTH Aachen that fulfill the following requirements are eligible to apply:

• At the time of application, every 15th of January, students must be enrolled in the 5th or 6th semester of the bachelor's degree program civil engineering or in the 1st semester of the master's degree program civil engineering, constructive engineering specialization
• Students should have at least good grades, only grades that are official at the time of the application will be considered
• Acceptable English skills (at least B2)
• Students should feel capable of accomplishing their studies in a foreign language as well as in a different school system

Application procedure

Students interested in the Master T.I.M.E. Double Degree with CTU Prague apply via RWTHonline for the Master's program Civil Engineering with specialization in Structural Engineering. Before submitting the application, please contact the responsible contact person in Department 1.2 - Student Affairs by e-mail, stating that the application is intended to participate in the T.I.M.E. Double Degree.

Studying for a Europe without borders

Erasmus+ is an acronym for the European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students. The European Union created the going abroad program Erasmus+ in 1987, to encourage the mobility of European students. The goal is to provide as many students as possible with the opportunity to go abroad within Europe in order to gather experiences in a different country and language, for at least one portion of their studies. Graduates who gathered experiences using this program should be qualified for the job market in a Europe without borders.

The Faculty of Civil Engineering has Erasmus+ possibilities with many European partner schools. The application for a place at one of the Erasmus+ partner universities is possible until January 31 for stays abroad in the following winter semester.

General information concerning the ERASMUS+-Program and ERASMUS+-Scholarships are available at the International Office of the RWTH Aachen University.

Swiss-European Mobility Programme (SEMP)

Starting in the academic year 2021/22, the government will impose a strict balance between incoming and outgoing students on universities in Switzerland as a prerequisite for promoting international mobility.

For regular study stays as exchange semesters via our partnership agreements, the requirements for SEMP scholarship funding on the part of the partner university will continue to be checked after nomination. In general, these exchange stays can be financially supported. Please refer to our information on the application procedure.

Research stays that exceed the contractual exchange places can no longer be financially supported by the SEMP scholarship in the future, but the tuition fees will still be waived. Please note that for research stays a nomination by RWTH or our faculty is also necessary and that the deadlines at the partner university have to be observed. As soon as you have identified a supervisor on-site, a period of time as well as a research topic and have received a confirmation of supervision from the Swiss university, you have to be nominated by the RWTH Office for International Affairs at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the partner university within the framework of the SEMP program. Due to these changed circumstances, the RWTH decided to open the PROMOS scholarship for research stays in Switzerland. For ETH Zurich, an application for the IDEA-League Research Grant is also possible.

 

Next to the possibilities for going abroad to a European partner universities within the means of the ERASMUS+ program, students of the Faculty of Civil Engineering also have the opportunity to study abroad at one of our non-European partner schools. Tuition costs from the partner university are waived in most cases as part of the university wide cooperation that the RWTH Aachen University has to many foreign universities. Furthermore, exchange students are supervised by the guest university as well as from the home university when it comes to administrative mentoring.

The application process for most of the non-European partner universities takes place using the International Office’s Application Portal. The exception to this is the non-European faculty specific partnerships that the Faculty of Civil Engineering has to offer: Queensland University of Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology, Waseda University, Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal and the Instituto Tecnologico de Aeronautica. For these Universities the application process takes place directly through the Faculty of Civil Engineering.

The International Exchange Office offers students an application check for students that apply to go abroad  to an non-European partner university through the International Office.

UROP Abroad offers RWTH Aachen University bachelor students that are at least in their third semester the possibility to take part in research projects within research facilities of partner universities in the USA and Canada. The research project can take place for an entire year, but should be at least two months long. There are possibilities to obtain a mobility scholarship within the means of the UROP Abroad program. The application for open projects takes place through the RWTH’s International Office. All current open research projects can be found on the UROP Project Database.

Built by a group of top technical universities and chosen European companies, UNITECH International is a union that strives to foster young leaders.

The UNITECH International scholarship is for students that have excellent grades and demonstrate exceptional soft skills. The program includes a one year of additional training that includes engineering and business administration modules and an internship in the head division of one of the companies as well as a seminar paper at a foreign university.

Internships abroad, as well as internship scholarships are also possible within the European Mobility Program ERASMUS+. Important information concerning the application requirements, scholarship sums and application process can be found on the RWTH Aachen’s International Office’s website.

Europe's leading technical universities in Delft, Zurich, Aachen and Paris have joined forces to maintain Europe’s long term leading position through joint research and teaching and have consequently formed the IDEA League in order to do so. The IDEA League grants scholarships for research projects in the core areas of energy, environment, health, information and communication technology and mobility for up to six months. Students and doctoral candidates can use a short research stay at an IDEA League partner university to carry out research as part of a thesis or dissertation, where participation in lectures and seminars are not planned. Detailed information on applying for a scholarship can be found on the respective pages of the International Office to which the application is to be submitted.

Young people working hard for a good cause.

As an international group, the volunteers build and renovate together to support social establishments. Anyone interested in getting involved can join! Social and non-profit organizations in Germany and Europe are supported by the construction camps. An alternative kindergarten in Magdeburg or the Jewish Community in Mainz, a meeting center in a small village in Romania, or a school for disabled children in Klaipeda, Lithuania - are just some examples of the various projects. The construction camps abroad are subsidized by the German Bauorden, to ensure that the volunteer work for these projects is a genuinely impactful contribution.

The NRC-MITACS-RWTH Globalink Research Award Program offers 25 fellowship-funded 6- to 12-month research stays in Canada per year at National Research Council Research Centers and Canadian universities participating in the program.

 

The program is open to Master's students and doctoral candidates from all faculties (with the exception of Faculties 2 and 8) and, in particular research areas congruent with the goals of the Canadian Challenge and Supercluster programs.
