Clean Air 2017 to 2020 Immediate Action Program

RESEARCH PROJECTS "Cities in Batch" & "eMIND

February 2019

In a joint funding initiative with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Construction and Nuclear Safety, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi) has called for the promotion of research and development in the field of electromobility. The immediate program "Clean Air 2017 to 2020" is intended to provide funding to municipalities with particularly high NOx pollution in order to improve air quality in the short term and sustainably.

In order to achieve this goal, two different consortia have been formed, in which the  Institute of Urban Engineering and Transport (ISB) is involved.

The consortium of the "Cities in Charge" project is made up of the Telekom subsidiary Comfortcharge GmbH, the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Applied Materials Research (IFAM), the state capital Dresden, and three chairs of RWTH Aachen University.
In addition to the ISB, these are the Human-Computer Interaction Center (HCIC) and the Institute for High Voltage Technology (IFHT).
The core of the project is the development of publicly accessible charging infrastructure (LIS) on Telekom properties. The further expansion of the LIS is intended to create new incentives to convert conventional vehicles to electric vehicles. The four research partners will conduct comprehensive accompanying research into the development of charging infrastructure (LIS) in German conurbations and its impact on air quality. Regional focal points within the project are in and around the metropolitan areas of Bonn, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne, Leipzig and Munich. Their NO2-pollution ranged between 42 µg/m³ and 80 µg/m³ in the annual mean value of 2016.

The project "eMIND" is locally limited and deals with the problem of air pollution control in the city of Düren and the associated catchment areas. In addition to the three RWTH Aachen University institutes ISB, HCIC and IFHT, the consortium consists of the city of Düren, WIN.DN GmbH and the line partners. With an annual mean value of 60 µg/m³ in 2016, the city is one of the ten most polluted cities in the republic. Despite reductions in recent years in the measured values, the limit value of 40 µg/m³ is exceeded.
In order to support this development more strongly and to further reduce NOx-pollution, the electrification of motorized private transport in the city (both fleets and private vehicles) represents an important building block. The focus of the project is on the development of charging infrastructure to support the spread of electromobility.

The kick-off event on January 14 at the BMWi in Berlin gave the network of funded projects and partners the opportunity to get to know each other, exchange ideas, and hold technical discussions. The large number of funded projects demonstrates the large number of possible approaches for the dissemination and design of LIS, which is intended to support the market ramp-up of electromobility and thus reduce NOx emissions.
