Professor Dr.-Ing. habil. Markus Oeser becomes President of the Federal Highway Research Institute

Start of work on the 1st of November 2021

The ISAC congratulates its director Professor Dr.-Ing. habil. Markus Oeser on his appointment as President of the Federal Highway Research Institute! He will take over the office from November 2021, his appointment was proposed by the Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, Andreas Scheuer.

Since 2011, Professor Oeser has headed the Chair and Institute of Highway Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, he has also been Dean at the Faculty of Civil Engineering since 2015, a member of the Board of the Faculty Association of Engineering and Computer Science at Universities e.V. (4ING) and, since 2021, chairman of the Faculty Day for Civil Engineering, Geodesy and Environmental Engineering e.V. (FTBGU). Also in 2015, Professor Oeser was appointed to a visiting professorship at the Harbin Institute of Technology in Harbin, Heilongjang, China. Therefore the ISAC also owes a close exchange with Chinese visiting scientists due to this circumstance, from which a large number of research projects have already benefited.

Professor Oeser also supervised numerous dissertations and final theses of students from various courses of study within the scope of different research projects at the institute. He imparted his extensive knowledge to students in various classes on construction technology, traffic technology and tunnel technology. In this context, Professor Oeser ensured a holistic education of the students and repeatedly cooperated with other institutes of the faculty within the framework of courses, for example for the lecture on planning methodology.

Before taking over as head of the Institute of Road Engineering, Professor Oeser was, among other things, a university lecturer at the University of New South Wales in Sydney in Australia and a research member at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.

He also contributes his extensive expertise to various research committees, professional associations and trade organizations, such as the Road, Earthworks and Tunneling Research Association Aachen e.V. (SETAC), the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Asphalt Institute (DAI), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Research Society for Road and Traffic Engineering (FGSV), and the International Society of Pavement Education (ISAP TC).

During this time, Professor Oeser's work has continued to enhance the research institution's long-standing reputation in both basic and practice-oriented research - around current issues and also on the road of the future. Therefore, all staff members express their sincere gratitude for these valuable and productive years of cooperation.

The ISAC bids farewell to Professor Oeser with the regret of losing such an institute director. At the same time, this appointment is of course a great reason for joy and a unique opportunity, both for Professor Oeser personally and for the BASt. The ISAC wishes all the best for the new position and is pleased that Professor Oeser will continue to be connected to the institute by supervising lectures and PhD students.
