The faculty is pleased to recently welcome two new members to the ranks of the professoriate:

University Professor Dr. Alvaro Garcia-Hernandez takes over the professorship and the institute management at the Institute of Highway Engineering Aachen (ISAC) after the departure of Professor Oeser.

Born in San Sebastian, he completed his professional education at the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) with a Master in Civil Engineering and received his PhD in 2008 from the Universidad de Cantabria (UC) in Northern Spain with the topic " Industrial Concrete Pavements from the Surface Finish Point of View".

As a Researcher at TU Delft, he then worked in the Micromechanics Laboratory, Microlab, on the project " Unravelling of Porous Asphalt Pavements", which pioneered the field of self-healing of asphalt.

He moved to the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (EMPA) in Switzerland in 2011, where he participated in the development of cold mixed asphalt modified with cement. He also researched the self-healing of asphalt induced by electromagnetic fields there.

As of 2013, he continued his career as an Assistant Professor at the Nottingham Transportation Engineering Centre (NTEC) at the University of Nottingham. He has worked on cold mix asphalt, energy harvesting from pavements, self-healing asphalt, and the development of new software for computational design of asphalt.

As an Associate Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Nottingham from 2020, he was able to deepen his research related to the automation and digitization of transport infrastructure and the functionalization of pavements.

His expertise in efficient road infrastructures and automation - such as of materials, construction and maintenance in the road sector - will be of great value, among other things, in view of ISAC's research visions around the road of the future.

Professor Dr. Antara Dasgupta has recently taken up the newly established junior professorship (with tenure track to W3) "Data-driven Computing in Civil Engineering", affiliated to the Chair and Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management, IWW.

After her bachelor's degree in chemistry, Ms. Dasgupta turned to remote sensing and geoinformatics for natural hazards and disaster risk reduction in her master's degree, a field she is still associated with today.
(Master in Natural Resource Management at Doon University, Dehradun, India and Master in Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Management at the University of Twente, The Netherlands).

She completed her PhD as a double degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Remote Sensing at IIT Bombay in Mumbai, India and Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

Research appointments have taken her to the University of Osnabrück, the German Research Center for Geosciences GFZ in Potsdam, and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), among others.

She continues to work in the Department of Civil Engineering at Monash University as an Adjunct Research Associate.

Her research at IWW will mainly focus on improving flood forecasting and monitoring by integrating remote sensing, crowd-sourcing, and physical and data-driven models. She specializes in digital image processing/remote sensing for flood studies, hydrodynamic modeling, machine learning, and hydraulic data assimilation.
