Admission Requirements of Courses of Studies
Civil Engineering (M.Sc.)
Technical Requirements
The admission requirements for the master's program Civil Engineering can be found in §3 of the current applicable examination regulations.
The creditable prior knowledge must be comparable to the knowledge and skills taught in the bachelor's program Civil Engineering at RWTH Aachen University (Master's Examination Regulations §3(2).
For a self-assessment if the Bachelor's degree meets the admission requirements of the RWTH Aachen University, applicants must compare the previous education with the subject-specific admission requirements of the current applicable examination regulation of the study program at the RWTH Aachen:
Mathematical-physical basics (38 CP):
- Mathematics: 16 CP
- Statistics: 3 CP
- Mechanics: 16 CP
- Hydromechanics: 3 CP
Civil engineering basics (80 CP), from two of the fields at least 20 CP each:
- Constructive Engineering
- Water Management
- Construction Operations and Geotechnics
- Transportation
The CPs (Credit Points) not only take into account the scope of the courses, but also the total workload of the students, including preparation, follow-up work, and examinations. A CP corresponds to the estimated workload of about 30 hours. As a rule, one semester consists of 30 CP. If the ECTS system was not used for the bachelor's degree, this must nevertheless be taken into account in the self-assessment. A preliminary assessment by the Faculty of Civil Engineering does not take place in principle. The examination of the technical admission requirements is only carried out after the application has been submitted.
Admission under Conditions
The examination board may admit a student to a Master's course of study on the condition that they obtain additional qualifications. Proof of completion of such additional requirements must be provided before registering for the master's thesis.
Admission to the master's program civil engineering is not possible if:
- Mathematical-physical basics: additional requirements > 9 CP
- Civil engineering basics: additional requirements > 26 CP
- The total scope of all additional requirements > 30 CP
Language Requirements
German is the language of instruction for the majority of specializations in the Civil Engineering M.Sc. program. An exception to this is the specialization of advanced computational methods in civil engineering, which can be studied completely in English. Applicants for advanced computational methods in civil engineering must provide proof of English language skills. Applicants for all other specializations must provide proof of German language skills, if they are not native German speakers or if they do not hold a German school or university degree. Transport Engineering and Mobility (M.Sc.)
Technical Requirements
The admission requirements for the master's degree program transport engineering and mobility can be found in §3 of the current applicable examination regulations.
The creditable prior knowledge must be comparable to the knowledge and skills taught in the bachelor's program transport engineering and mobility (master's examination regulations §3(2)).
For a self-assessment if the bachelor's degree meets the admission requirements of the RWTH Aachen University, applicants must compare the previous education with the subject-specific admission requirements of the currently applicable examination regulations of the study program at RWTH Aachen:
a) For the German specializations “Transportation Planning and Infrastructure”, “Road and Motor Vehicles”, “Airport and Aeronautics”, and “Rail Systems Engineering”:
1. Mathematical and Statistical Fundamentals: 18 ECTS CP, distributed among the individual areas as follows:
- Mathematics: at least 14 ECTS CP
- Statistics: at least 2 ECTS CP
2. Basics in the field of Mechanics (11 ECTS CP)
3. Other engineering fundamentals amounting (10 ECTS CP) from at least two of the following areas:
- Construction Materials Science/Material Science
- Control Engineering
- Geotechnics
- Environmental Management
- Hydromechanics / Fluid Mechanics
- Thermodynamics / Physics
- Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering
4. Subject-specific fundamentals amounting to a total of 50 ECTS CP, whereby at least 10 ECTS CP each must be demonstrated from two of the areas listed below:
- Area of transport: Road Engineering, Railroad Engineering, Airport Engineering, Transport Economics
- Mechanical Engineering: Machine Design, Vehicle Technology, Internal Combustion Engines, Rail Vehicle Technology, Aerospace Technology
- Electrical Engineering Field: Electrical Engineering, Battery Storage Technology, Electrical Machines
- Construction Field: Building Construction, Statics, Solid Construction, Steel Construction
- Area of Spatial Planning: Urban and Regional Planning, Traffic Planning, Urban Water Management
- Computer Science Area: Programming Languages, Database Systems.
b) For the English specialization “Railway Systems Engineering”:
1. Mathematical-statistical basics amounting to a total of 18 ECTS CP, distributed among the individual areas as follows:
- Mathematics: at least 14 ECTS CP
- Statistics: at least 2 ECTS CP
2. Basics in the field of mechanics amounting to 11 ECTS CP
3. Fundamentals of electrical engineering: 5 ECTS CP
4. Further engineering fundamentals to the extent of 10 ECTS CP from at least two of the

- Hydromechanics/ Fluid Mechanics/ Thermodynamics
- Physics

Scholarship for Master Students from the Global South in the field of Water and Climate Adaptation
The DAAD-funded Global Water and Climate Adaptation Centre – Aachen, Bangkok, Chennai, Dresden (ABCD-Centre) will award one full scholarship for 4 semesters to study the course “Sustainable Management Water and Energy M.Sc.” at RWTH Aachen University for students from the Global South. The creditable prior knowledge must be knowledge that is comparable to the contents taught in the Bachelor's program in Business Administration and Engineering: Civil Engineering at RWTH Aachen University (Master Examination Regulations § 3, Paragraph 2).

Pursuant to § 3 Para. 6 S. 1 ÜPO, admission is possible subject to conditions if the technical background cannot be fully demonstrated. These requirements must be proven at the latest by the time the Master's thesis is registered.
